Takes place every 4 years in the first Sunday of June. At the ship race take part one crew for every one of the ancient republic: Pisa, Amalfi, Genoa, Venice.
The rowers compete on the Arno river in a stretch of 2 km to conquer the golden and argent trophy depicting a rowing galleon identical to the ones use in the race.
The ships are distinguished by the color and the figureheads facing forwards that represent the animal symbol of their city:
Pisa, red – eagle
Amalfi, light blue – winged horse
Genoa, white – dragon
Venice, green – winged lion
The ship race is always preceded by the historical parade commemorating some of the most important facts of Pisa’s history. Walks in the street also the heroine Kinzica de’ Sismondi that in the 1004 saved the city from a saracen attack.
